Quick Backups on Linux

Quick backups when working on laptops or desktops.

http://linux.icydog.net/ssh/piping.php

Ray backup-ed up a laptop with the following command.

dd if=/dev/sda1 | gzip | ssh ryep@gutseb 'cat - > /gutseb2/vida/sda1_ntfs.dd'

This worked nicely and created a zipped image of the partition on my system.

Datacenter Guide

The data center is composed of a 2'x2' grid, with the long axis marked in letters and the short axis marked in numbers. Alternatively, if the room is square, the wall opposite the main entry should be marked in letters.

Racks are referred to by grid coordinates based on the location of the left-front of the rack (usually, where the handle to open the front door is. That is, if you stand in front of the rack, the tile underneath the right front corner should is the rack's coordinates.

Privileged Access Policy

Privileged Access (i.e., root or root equivalents) for machines managed by CSD-CF are bestowed to those who need it via the sudo command (sudo is short for "SUperuser DO"). To use it, simply prefix the command you want to run as root with "sudo". For example:

sudo /sbin/reboot

sudo will ask you to authenticate yourself by typing in your password. sudo remembers your password for five minutes after the last sudo command you ran, so that you don't have to continually enter your password.

Xenon Student Account Policies

These policies provide guidelines for use of accounts on the student machine Xenon. Failure to abide by these policies puts the user at risk of having his or her Xenon account disabled or removed. These policies are subject to change without notice.

Emergency Contacts

If you are the first person to find or be notified of a problem, but are not the primary contact for the machine/net/group/building affected, do the best you can and be sure to contact and follow up with the responsible parties. Better to contact too many people than too few. Apply common sense.

Custom Commands

This should really be called 'locally maintained scripts / software'. It's also old and only partial. Or why it's here and not under software.
