Research AreasWhat fascinates me most is Artificial Intelligence – as I see it, ‘making machines think like humans’. I know that some might see and define AI differently, but it is this particular view of AI that fascinates me most. More specifically, I am interested in finding parallels between human thinking processes and computers. I am interested in areas such as machine learning, pattern recognition and creativity modeling. I am also interested in the application of these AI techniques to traditional problems such as search and optimization, and more novel problems such as music composition.
Research ExperianceDuring my final year at university, I worked on a research project “Automatic Music Composition using a Tree of Interacting Emergent Systems”. I later developed some my ideas that I had worked out here in a couple of research papers. I have worked as a student researcher with two commercial companies – First, on fabric utilization optimization project for Brandix (Sri Lanka’s leading Clothing Manufacturers) – Second, on several music/computer related research projects for Soundmouse, a British Music Company wit ha development arm in Sri Lanka. I also worked on a research project with my father (who is an Electrical Engineer) on “Minimizing life cycle costs of industrial Low Voltage distribution networks” and published a paper based on the work we did. I have researched into several areas that have interested me on my own, independently. Based on one such attempt, I wrote a paper “Genetic Algorithms: The Crossover – Mutation Debate”. This is awaiting acceptance for publication. |
