Work Experience

Research Assistant

I am currently working as a Research Assistant at the Center for Integrated Facility Engineering, Stanford University. (July 2007 to Present).

Business Analyst

I worked as a Business Analyst at Millennium Information Technologies, Sri Lanka. (Aug 2006 to Dec 2006).

Software Developer

I worked as a Software Developer Intern at Industrial and Financial Systems, Research and Development Ltd.. (Aug 2005 to Dec 2005).

Student Researcher

I worked as a Student Researcher on a project for Brandix Ltd. , developing a Fabric-Utilization Optimization Application based on AI techniques (October 2004 to December 2004).

Brandix is Sri Lanka's largest manufacturer and exporter of garments to the United States of America and United Kingdom, servicing some of the world's premiere fashion brands such as Marks & Spencer, Tommy Hilfiger, GAP, Liz Claiborne, Abercrombie Fitch, NEXT, Nike, Victoria's Secret, Levis and Dockers (to name but a few). At present, Brandix Apparel has a Sales Turnover of approximately US $ 200 million per annum, and has a work force of around 18,000 associates.

I was hired to build a system that would automatically lay out fabric markers in a controlled and intelligent manner, so that fabric waste would be minimized. The finished system was based on a Genetic Algorithm/Simulated Annealing technique. To maximize its performance, the algorithm was prototyped and refined several times, often incorporating production-process-domain-specific constraints. Results showed a significant improvement in fabric utilization efficiency and a drastic reduction in the time required to plan a marker.

Software Development Consultant

I worked with Adelanka Pvt. Ltd. (Sri Lankan arm of UK based Soundmouse Ltd.) as a Software Development Consultant on a range of music related applications (May 2005 to May 2006).

Soundmouse Ltd. is a UK based music company dealing with a range of music related applications. These range from music databases to music sharing systems.

I was involved in developing several AI related music applications. Among these are an evolving-search-tree based music database, a Genetic Algorithm based musical-psycho-acoustic feature recognizer and a grammatical parser for music files mimicking a language parser.

Assistant Lecturer

I also worked as a Assistant Lecturer at the University of Colombo School of Computing, Sri Lanka. (Jan 2007 to Aug 2007).
