Computer and Email Setup

Overview

Note: Incoming students should have mail and packages sent to their residence address until they are assigned to a CoDa or Gates office. We do not have the capacity to hold mail without a specific CoDa or Gates room designation.

Computers

• For all CS students, the Department provides a Linux server (called Xenon) for general use. This includes email and web browsing, however, not for classwork. 
• Students involved with a given research project (including most PhD and some Master's students) generally move their activities onto machines owned by their research group. Every PhD student can expect to have a research group work station on their desk (at least by the second year). 

Stanford/CS User IDs and E-mail

• Your University username is known as your SUNet ID, and you use it to log in to various Stanford web pages.
  • Your Stanford email address will be in the format of sss@stanford.edu (where sss is your SUNet ID). That address will be valid as long as you are a Stanford student.
• As a CS student, you get a CSID and an email address in the form of ccc@cs.stanford.edu (where ccc is your CSID).
  • New students, please request a CSID online (here) after New Student Orientation. We generally recommend that you choose a CSID that is the same as your SUNet ID.
• Your CS email must be forwarded to the system where you read your email (e.g., sss@stanford.edu or ccc@xenon.stanford.edu or ggg@gmail.com).
  • Do not leave your CS email forwarding address blank or set it to ccc@cs.stanford.edu. If you do, your CS email will bounce.
  • You can update your CS email forwarding and other personal information (password, phone numbers, addresses, web page, etc.) in the CS database here.
