Overview
Faculty allies' advice will come from their perspective as former grad students and current department faculty members. However, we would like to summarize some additional resources here. We encourage faculty allies to read through them and make suggestions to students.
Helpful information:
Jay and Omer have compiled an excellent document with resources for PhD students. See the helpful information below:
- Advisor issues - The best way to resolve issues with your advisor is to discuss them directly with your advisor, and we expect that faculty will appreciate this and respond constructively. However, if you don't feel comfortable talking with your advisor, or if the discussions have failed to resolve the issue, please get in touch with any of the following:
- PhD Program Chair (Omer Reingold): reingold@stanford.edu
- PhD Program and Graduate Admissions Director (Jay Subramanian): jayanthi@stanford.edu
- An entity that is external to the department, in case it makes you feel more comfortable, is the Office of the Ombuds: ombuds@stanford.edu
- Sexual harassment - Sexual harassment is completely unacceptable in our department (or anywhere), and yet it is tough to root out. We urge you to speak up about any problem you encounter on the large spectrum of sexual harassment so that we can address them.
- As we are aware of the difficulty of reporting sexual harassment, we want you to be aware of the large variety of possible avenues for reporting:
- Stanford's Title IX office: titleix@stanford.edu
- Office of the Ombuds: ombuds@stanford.edu (which, unlike entities within the department, is exempt from Title IX reporting)
- Your advisor or any faculty you trust.
- PhD Program Chair (Omer Reingold): reingold@stanford.edu
- PhD Program and Graduate Admissions Director (Jay Subramanian): jayanthi@stanford.edu
- As we are aware of the difficulty of reporting sexual harassment, we want you to be aware of the large variety of possible avenues for reporting:
- Hostile workplace issues -Your advisor is the best place to start unless they are part of the problem. In addition, any of the following contacts would be happy to help:
- PhD Program Chair (Omer Reingold): reingold@stanford.edu
- PhD Program and Graduate Admissions Director (Jay Subramanian): jayanthi@stanford.edu
- If you rather discuss it outside of the department, then yet again, the Office of the Ombuds could be a good option: ombuds@stanford.edu
- Space/access to the building - Buildings team and Director of Finance and Administration: fixit@cs.stanford.edu
- Funding - RAships and CAships
- Fellowship opportunities
- Challenges with rotations -
- PhD Program and Graduate Admissions Director (Jay Subramanian): jayanthi@stanford.edu
- PhD Program Chair (Omer Reingold): reingold@stanford.edu
- Internships/CPT/OPT issues - PhD Program and Graduate Admissions Director (Jay Subramanian): jayanthi@stanford.edu

- Reimbursement for social events - PhD Student Services: phdstudentservices@cs.stanford.edu
- IT issues, such as computing and gmail CS accounts

- CS Student Advisory Council - This is a forum for discussing issues that affect many or all CS PhD students, including problems not currently being addressed and opportunities to improve the program. The Advisory Council chooses the most important of these issues to bring to the attention of the faculty.
- Áron Perez-Lopez Ricardo: arpl@stanford.edu or
- Alexander (AJ) Root : ajroot@stanford.edu
General Wellbeing:
- Health and Well-Being summarizes mental health resources at Stanford. They offer immediate help and confidential resources. Topics they can help with include financial wellness, substance abuse, nutrition counseling, and much more. They also have workshops on specific topics related to well-being.
- Office of Accessible Education - Students who may need an academic accommodation based on the impact of a disability must register with the Office of Accessible Education (OAE) and initiate their requests. The OAE provides accommodations in both housing and dining based on medically documented disabilities. Each student’s needs are determined on an individualized, case-by-case basis.
PhD Life:
- VPGE offers classes on different topics related to grad student life, e.g. Communicating Effectively With Your Advisor, Interdisciplinary Learning.
- CGOE also has classes on topics related to professional growth.
